Cospa – Phantasy Star Online – El Rappy Plush

This is probably one of the rarest plushes in my collection. I was a big fan of the original Phantasy Star Online on Dreamcast back when it was first released, and players in the US back then (at least those on the PSO World forums) were aware of this Japanese-exclusive set, but I don’t believe it was being sold by any of the major import stores that shipped to the US, so it remained pretty out of reach. I ended up tracking this El Rappy plush down on eBay a few years later, but it’s the only one from the set I was ever able to get my hands on.

The set consisted of 5 plushes, released between May 2002 and February 2003:

でかラッピーぬいぐるみ (Large Rag Rappy Plush)
ラブラッピーぬいぐるみ (Love Rappy Plush)

The first Rag Rappy plush became available to purchase from Cospa back around May 2002 and was then followed by the event-exclusive Al Rappy plush, which debuted at Tokyo Game Show 2002 in September [source]. An extra large Rag Rappy size variant was then released in January 2003, and then the El Rappy and Love Rappy plushes (in the original size) also followed shortly after.

The Japanese Sonic Team website advertised these plushes and other PSO merchandise on their website. The images below were taken from Sonic Team’s page for Cospa’s PSO plushes and t-shirts from 2002 and 2003 via the Internet Archive. Between these two entries promoting the original Rag Rappy release and the later El Rappy and Love Rappy releases was an entry for the giant Rag Rappy plush, though the image is missing for that one on the archived pages.

The February 2003 archive of this page is missing the images, but contains the following update from January 30th announcing the last two plushes in the set and stating that the large Rappy plush is currently available:

Here are some archived screenshots from the Cospa website announcing the event-limited Al Rappy plush sometime in 2002, along with a shot of the product search page listing all 5 plushes and their availability as of April 2003 (again, some images are missing from the archived site).

Below are some of the images from Cospa’s PSO product page from December 2002. Once again, the Al Rappy is listed as an event-exclusive item, though I’m not sure if it was only available at TGS or if there were any other events where it was sold. You can also see the color differences between the initial Rag Rappy sample plush and the final version, as well as the difference in scale between the original and larger version of the Rag Rappy.
